I am re-installing Windows 98 on a computer and for some
reason that I can't figure out, the Microsoft Networking
log-on dialogue does not appear when the computer starts
(as it did prior to the reinstallation). I have the
default logon in the network setting as Client for
Microsoft Windows and the network is working fine if I
logoff and then logon. Without loging off and on again, I
can access the Internet but not any other computers within
my home network. Any ideas?

This is a common problem in Windows 95/98/Me. It can happen even when
you've done everything right, especially right after installing the
operating system. The most likely fix is to run the registry editor,
open this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
Network\Real Mode Net

and delete the value named "AutoLogon". This web site explains how to
do it:

Using REGEDIT, open up the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
Network\Real Mode Net

and delete the value named "AutoLogon" if it exists.

Reboot the system and that should do it.
