Actually, L2TP+IPsec provides one feature not available in PPTP -- machine
authentication. L2TP authenticates the user, just like PPTP does. Then IPsec
authenticates the computer; there is no equivalent in PPTP. Computer authentication
helps you know that remote access clients are machines that you trust because
you can control the distribution of digital certificates only to machines
that you want to allow.
Also, PPTP's encryption ciphers use the password as a seed, so the strength
of your tunnel is related somewhat to the strength of your password. L2TP+IPsec
doesn't have this shortcoming.
