You don't need a microfilter for a router.
A microfilter is what you use to filter the ADSL signal out when
connecting a voice phone, fax or analog modem to an ADSL enabled phone
line. See e.g. <http://www.adslnation.com/products/xf-1e.php> for an
example of a microfilter. The usual configuration is a plug that goes
into the phone socket and two sockets - a filtered one for phone etc,
and an unfiltered one for plugging in your ADSL modem. The usual cheap
ones look like one of those phone socket doubler adapters except that
the two sockets are different sizes.
If you have a combined ADSL modem/router you would plug the ADSL modem
part into an unfiltered socket, and is is normal for this to be the
unfiltered socket of a microfilter unit.

Also useful to say exactly which make/model of kit you have, what you
want to do, what you have done so far etc.

Definitely a good idea - get it working with wires first.

I had no trouble with the one I used - it is an easy way to add WiFi to
a desktop machine.
