Am trying to install a new Netgear WG511 wireless adapter
in IBM Win98 laptop. After reboot shows Windows error
window saying "The WG511WLU.EXE file is linked to missing
Export MFC42.DLL:6781." Windows Device Manager shows error
(yellow exclamation point). Same card and install code
installs fine on a Win 2000 Pro laptop. Netgear says it's
a Windows problem. (?) Windows has all Updates applied.

Search your whole PC for copies of mfc42.dll
When you find them determine which is the most recent, by version number not date.
Copy the most recent to c:\windows\system
Delete all the other copies
Send angry letters to all the software companies that installed obsolete versions in
their own private directories.

Thanks for that, but no joy. I found 3 copies, and
Windows\System had the latest copy, 4.21.7325.
