Does anyone have any experiences of, or opinions on, Metronet as ADSL
ISP?

Their pay-as-you-go style[0] service looks quite good for my
parents[1], who have very variable usage patterns.

1] I'm with Easynet, myself.

I haven't used it myself but I know someone who has and seems to think
they're rather good (but has only been using them a few days). Ratings
on www.ADSLguide.org.uk are very impressive, staff post in the AG forum
and they seem like a nice ISP. They answered my (only sales) query
within an hour or so, they give all users a free firewall, users get rrd
graphs of their useage and usage tables. The whole package looks rather
well finished; I was rather impressed.

I won't be switching from AAISP because my usage isn't really Metronet
type useage levels but, if I were choosing for relatives, etc then
Metronet would be very high up my list

Been with them for two months now. Great service, fast and reliable. Last
month I used 1.5 Gbyte and it cost £16. News service is excellent.

nb. Installation cost £70. All prices on web site do not include VAT and
bills are paid in arrears.

Nor me in terms of usage. Helped a friend set up his PC with a PCI card
and he's not rung back with cries of "help!" in months now...

I'm not sure when they added that...

Must admit he's been working away (think he might have gone off to see
the Rugby, luck s*d) so have not actually seen usage info...

Same here... fine for infrequent users, backup, or for spells of
heavy/light use for someone working away some of the year. PGM.

1st October I believe (details at http://www.metronet.co.uk/adsl/firewall)

Traffic blocked by this firewall does not count towards your usage.

Yes, again, it woudn't suit my usage pattern but users of the service seem
very happy at http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist...Board=metronet

1st October
more info: http://www.metronet.co.uk/adsl/firewall

It doesn't look like it's that customisable but, even so, I can see it
making a big difference (if people use it...)

Even their maximum prices aren't too bad at all. It's a shame that a
static IP costs £30 pa (and they don't even mention the price for 8 IPs!)

Na, they changed their minds about that one :P
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showthre...&Number=985959

As pointed out several times in that thread tho, traffic from port scans
is negligible.

Just gone with them. Took 7 days to put me on line as they said it would.
Tech support are very good, had some issues with Kmail in Linux over smtp.
But over all they seem ok. They do appear to be very honest over billing,
they will tell you they don't make any money on the basic paygo500. So
they hope you start to go over the 200 meg basic allowance, which I have
already( kid with a new toy etc). Had more trouble with new origo ASR8400
router which kills voice traffic !!.

One static IP is included in the standard PAYG500. This price is
presumably for additional ones. You do, however, have to pay for even
one POP3 mailbox - £7.50 + VAT.

You might read about port995.com (?) losing mail some time ago... But
anyway, get a free to use IMAP/webmail account from fastmail.fm (lots
of different domain names to choose from). Peter M.
