Media Center Internet Issues

I just bought a new Gateway PC that has Windows Media Center 2005 on it, and
I can not get my Linksys USB Wireless Adapter to connect. It is not
compatible with Media Center as I have been told by their tech support, so do
you all know of any solutions I can use to wirelessly connect to my network
that are compatible with Media Center?

Can you give us more detail on just what is happening or not happening? It
doesn't work might tell you everything, but for me it leaves me guessing.
Windows Media Center is windows xp with some advanced networking features
disabled. At what point does it fail, do the drivers install?

I tried to install the wireless adapter, and at first it worked, and then it
says:
restart your computer to finishinstalling the device

I restarted, and then it says "device may not be supported by windows, we
recommend you immediately uninstall this device to prevent damage to your
system"

I tried continuing from there, and then later uninstalled it. I tried every
way I could think of, and it just would not allow the adapter to work.

I also did some internet research, and other users on the linksys forum
talked about installing another driver, because they said very few wireless
adapters are supported by 64bit OS's, and there was a driver on the Ralink
website they said to use, but it would not install on my computer. I'm
currently using a 2nd computer, because I could not find any possible way to
connect it to the internet, either wireless or with a wired connection. I
would think Media Center would have to be internet accessable, so I'm not
sure exactly what is wrong. Is there a certain adapter I need, and if so,
what do you recommend if you know of one that is compatible with Windows MC?

As far as I know there is not a 64 bit version of Windows MCE unless we are
talking about Vista Ultimate. He said Windows MCE 2005, so I believe we are
talking the normal Windows XP environment.

Adam - You do NOT have a 64 bit OS. That's probably why the 64 bit
Ralink driver would not install.

I have heard that Linksys tech support claims not to support their USB
wireless adapters for Win XP MCE, but AFAIK, that's because Linksys
hasn't fully "certified" their products for MCE. I don't believe that
they are are affirmitively saying that the products will not work with MCE.

Please post back with more details. What model adapter do you have?
What exactly did you do? And what do you mean that "at first it worked"?
How did you uninstall it?

Finally, what do you mean by "I could not find any possible way to
connect it to the internet, either wireless or with a wired connection"?
What did you try as a "wired connection" and what happened?

What i did first, is I plugged it in, and it just asked me the SSID for my
network, and I typed it in, and then I got onto the web, and everything was
working. And about 10 minutes later, it says device not recognized etc...
like I said in the original post, so I unplugged it, ran the install disk,
and then it would not recognize the adapter from then on, even after multiple
installs/uninstalls. It is a Linksys WUSB54G wireless adapter.

My dad is the one that told me it was a 64bit OS,but I don't know where he
got that from. I'm still at a loss for how to connect it. I tried again,
and it wants a certain driver, that is not anywhere on the disk, or on the
linksys site, but I found it on the Ralink site. How can I make sure its not
in 64bit mode, even though I don't think it is?

I just tried again, and what I got this time, was that it wants a new driver,
that is rt2500usb.sys I have that on the disk, but when I select it to
install that driver, it will not install the driver. I also discovered it is
MCE 2002, not 2005. The sticker on the front says 05, but the actual OS is
02, not sure if that helps, but thats as far as I have gotten so far. There
is a rt2500usb.sys on the Ralink website, that I tried to download, but it
would not work from there either. I'm thinking maybe a different adapter
would be better.

I tried this time moving my entire computer into the other room, and
hardwiring it directly to the router (2WIRE Homeportal), with both ethernet
and usb cables, and the computer only recognizes is through the USB port, but
it will not actually connect with the router, even after installing it. I
have absolutely no idea how I'm going to connect it to the internet if it
will not connect through any of the ways i've tried. Any other suggestions?

You've got the normal OS there is as I said before no 64 bit version of MCE
2005. So did you attempt to install 64 bit versions of the driver?

When you connect with Ethernet cable to the 2WIRE and go to | Start | Run |
CMD {Enter} | ipconfig /all {Enter} | what do you get? Please post it here.

I could not get the ethernet to recognize any signal from the 2wire router,
so I decided to ask the gateway support, and what he said is to get the
belkin 802.11g wireless card, and that will connect. Well, I got that today,
and I get the same problem I had with the last one in the device manager,
that the driver is not recognized by the computer, so it does not function.
I installed the driver directly from the cd, so I have no idea why. If its
had the exact same problem with two different pieces of hardware, its
starting to make me think that the computer may have a problem.
