The Compaq WL100 has a clever bit of software for showing signal strength,
SNR and connection speed.
Eg

http://www.frars.org.uk/images/contentimages/1066.jpg
You cannot get hold of the WL100 any more. (

Does anyone know of a product (PCMCIA or PCI or USB) on the market at the
moment that does the same?
I would prefer USB as that is more flexible.

Cheers

Rob

the Dlink dwl-120+ USB has a nice utility that comes close
http://pages.ripco.net/~a2k/dwl120.jpg are there plans online for
either of the antennas shown?

I have a DWL-120 but not the the DWL-120+ (
Looks like I need to get the + version too.
I doubt if the software will run on the 120.

That looks identical to the Orinoco client manager screen.
I'm not sure if it is unchanged with the current Orinoco cards. Mine is an
earlier generation, identical to the Dell TrueMobile 1150.

Does your card have an FCC ID on the back, or is that only for USA?
Do a Google search for "IMRWLPCE2411R".
You will find http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/network...ntr/en/reg.htm
which is FCC certification of the Dell Truemobile.
You will also see the other cards that are the same FCC ID.

Dell has the Orinoco "Gold", with external connector. $49, sometimes less.

the 120+ has a TI chipset and the previous ones were Atmel
I plan to attach it directly to a yagi or patch antenna with a
15 foot cable I made up,losses and measuring the right length of
coax at 2.4ghz is a pain.. USB is the way to go

I have ordered the DWL-120+ and a 3 meter cable now and should be with me by
Friday.
I have a 1.3km link that may need tweaking and I could do with knowing the
signal strength/quality to a fine degree.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Is there an easy way to plug a usb cable into a router?
Is there such a thing as a usb/ethernet router?

Cheers

Rob

Ok, it works locally fine with good accurate signal strength and link
quality but 1.3 km to a 19 dB dish with possible LOS it does not.
Tried a bi-quad on the DWL 120 but that did not work either, may need a
better gain antenna than a bi-quad.
May need to get some of them 200mw Senao units from the states.

Cheers

how did you attach the biquad to the 120? the dish may work but I would
attach 1/2 wavelength feed to the dish without a connector and directly
to the board of the 120, rg-176 mil grade teflon is good for this in
short lengths

I used the pigtail out of the DWL 900AP+ which has a some kind of load
balance lump in the middle of the cable.
