Me, XP and ICS

Hi,

I have added a desktop running Me to an existing home network - the host PC
is running XPPro, the laptop XPHome. They are connected via a D-link switch.
Agnitum Outpost Pro firewall is installed on the XpPro host and the clients
are defined in the firewall setup as "trusted". After some effort, the Me PC
was successfully connected to the network, ie all the computers can see each
other and have access to each other's files. However, the Me can't access
the Internet. The firewall is not blocking any activity in this regard, in
fact there isn't any activity which leads me to think that I have probably
unchecked something in the Me setup. If anyone has been through this before,
I would appreciate it if they could point me in the right direction - it
can't be much of a problem.

Thanks

On Me, run Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet Options |
Connections | LAN Settings, and clear all of the boxes on that screen.
Reboot.

If that doesn't solve the problem, run these tests:

1. On the host PC, right click the local area network connection and
click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On Me, go to Start | Run | Winipcfg, select the Ethernet adapter
from the menu, and click More Info. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on Me and
enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on
Me. They should both take you to the Google web page:

Thanks Steve,

Actually, I saw in one your replies to another poster yesterday the answer
to my problem, ie I had activated ICS on the WinMe client. I deactivated it
last night and now all is up and running. All I've got to do now is find a
way of making sure my daughter doesn't accidentally come across any of these
damned porn sites !

Pete
