Background:
I'm running a router with one computer connected via cable and the other via
wireless card. #1 machine had the wireless running W98 and #2 was running
ME. All was fine until the attacks from the internet got so bad that the
extra software running to provide security nearly brought #2 to a snail pace
which was unsat for some of the apps I was running on it. Enter new machine
#3. I put it together and in part to stay legal since I had an extra OS
laying around I chose to install it. Also there has been much discussion
that SE was better than ME and so I purchased it a long time ago, but never
went through the pain of wiping everything from #2 to do so. Also didn't
want to kill the current configuration on it until I was sure this new box
#3 was OK. So SE is installed on #3. It does seems that SE might be a little
old for this new hardware although it came with SE drivers. There was much
on #2 HDD that I wanted transferred to #3. #2 was getting pretty full even
at 40GB with data and downloaded updates, games, etc. Because of that
condition everthing was no longer ending up in my primary storage area. And
when I temporarily piled everything around my router so I could accomplish
the transfer, I missed some important files and data. So I moved the
wireless card from #1 to #2 and #3 is at the router and wired.
Logging into the router from either machine I can see the DHCP client list
including both machines. I can browse the internet from either machine. In
networking the hardware plus TCP/IP is installed along with MS network and
sharing. From #2 I can find #3 and map drives, but exploring the network
shows me the workgroup and #2 only.
#3 can not find #2. Double clicking the Entire network gives error cannot
browse the network, I think, and sometimes it will show the workgroup with
#3 machine.
May have nothing to do with it, but it doesn't seem correct. Group and name
were entered in lower case. On #3, the SE machine, when allow all upper case
is checked that is what it does, or rather converts it to all upper case.
Unchecked, it capitalizes the first letter. On ME, it shows me what I typed.
Also running the troubleshooter from ME, it keeps nagging me that I might
have duplicated that name or it is already in use. Something like that.
I apparently have some issue with the troubleshooter on SE. Choosing any of
the statements under networking trouble shooter and clicking next gives a
blank page.
I've read until I think I need an eye doctor and a hand full of aspirin.
Please Help.
Update.
I ran net diag.
SE acting as server, the ME machine says OK. Running from ME, SE can't see
the other.
I have Zone Alarm 5.5 on the ME machine. I've seen where there had been some
complaints about ZA interferring and having to remove it. ZA site says it
was fixed after 5.01. Also I shut it totally down, I think through editing
the Startup. Your thoughts appreciated.
Does anyone know the proper setting for browse master and LanManager
Announce for my current situation. Currently at Auto and No.
Still letting the router auto assign, etc. as I've had no reason to believe
that isn't working as I'm able to browse the net from either machine. BUT,
I'm now beginning to believe anything is possible. Against what seems to be
95% of the advice I've found for browse master and LM announce, I've set the
ME to enable and yes. I now have full access to SE on machine 3. And I can
do a find and it shows #2, but clicking gives an error is not available.
Could not be found. And the more I look, it seems this networking issue
seems to extend across several platforms including XP.
Can someone help,pleasse
