ME and XP Networking and password request

Two computers connected through ethernet ports by crossover cable. One runs
XP and the other ME. Both setup to use a workgroup configuration.
Both machines can see the other in the Network Places window. The XP machine
can access shares on the ME maching with no problem. When I try to access the
XP machine from the ME unit I get a dialog which says:

Enter Network Password
Resource \\XPUnit\IPC$

I don't know what to enter (or why this dislog is occuring). The password
for the admin on the XP machine does not work, neither does the one for the
user of the ME machine.

There's no correct response to the IPC$ prompt. It means that the XP
computer is receiving ME's access request, but that XP isn't
configured to allow network access.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP -- that's usually all that's needed
to solve the IPC$ problem. You don't need to run the Wizard on the ME
machine, even if it tells you to.

If that doesn't fix it, make sure that the XP Guest account is enabled
for network access and that it doesn't have a password:

1. Type this line in the Start | Run box and click OK:

net user guest /active:yes

2. Type this line in the Start | Run box and click OK:

control userpasswords2

3. Click Guest.

4. Click Reset Password.

5. Click OK without entering a new password.

requires enabling of "file and print sharing" on your XP machine. Check
"help".

Thanks guys, but nothing seemed to help. I gave up and installed XP on the
second computer and all is well. In this situation it is not necessary to
have the guest account enabled on etither computer. All I had to do was run
the home network wiz on each, in both cases specifying that neither machine
connects to the Internet. It is also necessary that a user have identical
credentials on each machine to access the other. I am next going to try the
ICS setup and see how that goes.
