In our small office we have one sever (Windows 2000 Advanced Server) with 6
clinets.
At present we dont have that much useage of of our network but the server is
teremendously slow. In order to check the reason I got to Task manager
through (ctrl+Alt +Del) and in the processes tab there is a file
""mctd.exe"" (not sure about exact name) which consumes 90% of CPU Usage and
I dont know what exactly is it. Even it is impossible to "End Task" it. I
have everything else and hadn't find anything anormal except above.
Unfortunately we dont have a good and updated antivirus for virus checking.
I suppose the main reason for our server to be be slow is this file. What
sall I do to get rid of this file and return the server to proper speed.
Any comment is wellcome

If you can post the exact name of the file that is causing the CPU spike we
can help further. Or if you do a search for the file on google, find out
where the file resides on disk etc, you should be able to determine if you
actually need the file.

Dear Dusty Harper

Thanks for your comments. At the moment I dont have the exact file name. Let
me post them after about 10 hours including other necessary data.

Rasoul

It is a Windows Component. You can try the following command:

Net Stop MSDTC

If the service is not needed, you can set the service to disable.
Additionally, you will want to check the version information of the file to
verify that it is the legitimate file. This can be done by right clicking
the file and selecting Properties.

Dear Dusty Harper

Thanks for your info but before considering your comments I read another reply to my question posted on
microsoft.public.windows.server.networking by Eric the IT Novice on Thursday July 08, 8:18 PM. He is it is a spyware? Could you please kindly have a look at the link he has referenced.

Very Sincerely Yours

Rasoul

PS) I will do as you wrote and will be back again.

I've looked at the posters comments. Whether a spyware program utilizes this or not is not what's at debate here. THe program is for Microsoft's Distributed Transaction Coordinator service. This service comes with Windows by default. SQL will utilize it too.

The file version information should tell you if another application replaced the file with the original.

After stopping the service, you will want to verify that all your SQL operations are functioning properly. If this fixes your issue, then you can set the service to be disabled.

Dear Dusty Harper

Regarding to your reply, the requested data are as follows:
Image Name PID CPU CPUTime Mem Usage
msdtc.exe 748 80 4:02:39 5,444 K
(bigesst time)

The file msdtc.exe exists in three palce as follows:
C:/winnt/system32, 7KB
C:/winnt/system32/dllcache, 7KB
unzip_msdtc.exe in D:/New Folder/devtools/samples/msdtc, 135 Kb Description:
Package for the Web Stub

I think the New Folder is the folder SQL has been installed.

Now my question:
Is msdtc.exe a windows component or SQL component?
The company who has installed SQL for us blames that msdtc.exe is a Windows
component and it consumes CPU because the Antivirus software (McAfee) has
not been installed properely?!?
And the company who has installed Windows and Antivirus blame that msdtc.exe
is a SQL component. Which one is true?

Our windows: MS Windows 2000 (SP3) Advanced Server
Our SQL: SQL Server Personal Edition

Thanks in Advance

Very Sincerely Yours
Rasoul Khoshravan
