Maybe OT but have MS Outlook problem with wireless

Hello, all -

I have MS Office 2000 installed on my laptop and I have functioning wireless
capabilities. If I go to a spot that has service, I can get a wireless
connection, BUT I can only use Internet Explorer. I cannot seem to get
Outlook or Outlook Express to use the wireless connection.

I asked a couple of tech-savvy people the other night...the only response
was that one of them thought he remembered that some well-hidden setting had
to be changed in order to make this happen.

Anyone know anything about this, or possibly know where I might begin to
look?

Do you get an error message when you try to send email? If so, what is the
exact text, including the socket error number?

If you have Outlook configured to use a POP or IMAP server on your regular
ISP's network, you might be able to receive email but not send it. Many ISPs
disable mail relay. If you send email from the hotspot to your regular
server, it appears to come from a net other than the ISP's and it is
rejected. That's to prevent spammers from hijacking your email id.

Thank you for your reply. I don't get an error message; the software simply
does not find the connnection. Therefore I cannot either send or receive.

FWIW, the software works otherwise. I'm using the laptop now, for this
message, on dial-up.

Thanks for any further assistance.

Try sending email to your own email id before leaving home, but do NOT
receive it. When you get to the hotspot, start up Outlook and "synchronize
all". Do you see any incoming email? Does a menu pop up showing an attempt
to receive mail? If there is an error popup, save all the text and error
number and post it here.

If *nothing* happens, not even an error popup of any kind, that's really
odd. I'd start a cmd window and try to ping the inbound and outbound mail
server hostnames. If either of them do not respond, you have a connectivity
issue. Type "ipconfig /all" and see if both a gateway and a DNS server show
up (they should, since you say explorer works). If one of these is missing,
you might need to configure it manually (get the info from the hotspot
management).

It's possible that both of your ISP's servers simply refuse to allow you to
connect from outside the ISP's net, without any reject message (but then,
Outlook should show you at least a timeout error).

In Outlook Express, try Tools/Accounts/Mail/<pick your e'mail
account>/Properties/Connection and uncheck "Always connect to this account
using:". This ought to get OE to use any live network connection.

Incidentally, Gary's remark about using your ISP's SMTP server when you're
not on your ISP's network should be taken to heart. Unless the hotspot uses
the same ISP, sending from OE will still probably not work --- the bounce
message will read "no relaying allowed" or some such thing.

And since you'll be using it on untrusted networks you should also
look into the secure options for both sending and receiving email.
Start by asking the ISP where you receive your mail what they have
available to protect your privacy when you access it via third-party
and wireless networks.

Thank you all...I will try the things you've suggested in a day or two, next
time I go to the local coffee shop, and we'll see what happens.
