No, disabling the computer browser service on workstations will not stop
them from browsing. That service is only involved with electing master
browsers. On my home network, the computer browser service is disabled on
all machines except one. Because they are all XPs, I was having problems
with browser elections when machines started and stopped. Now browsing only
fails if that particular machine is off. Browser elections are a pain.
If you have ISDOMAINMASTER set to FALSE on all servers except the PDC
but you have the computer browser service running on your workstations, some
of the workstations will become at least backup browsers. There is usually a
backup browser for each 32 workstations. You would be better off having the
servers set to AUTO and have the browser service stopped on the
workstations. Avoid running the browser service on servers which are
multihomed or RRAS servers if you can.
The entries in WINS for the master browser are added automatically, but
"wrong" entries can hang around for a while.
Have you any idea what is setting off the browser elections? Browsing is
usually pretty stable if the servers are always up.
