How can I find the master browsers on my network? I would really like to
have the server do that with an XP client as backup. How would I stop any
other Win98/XP clients from jumping in as well?

Small network, Server 2003, 4 XP, 6 Win98.
Regards

There is a utility called browman.exe that will tell you. There are also
registry keys you can set.

If you have a domain in place the W2k3 server will
act as the Domain Master Browser (DMB) it does this by
registering a domain name 1b unique name for domains.
To stop the XP machines you can disable the computer
browser service. On the Win 9x machines open the
properties of the file and print sharing client and disable
the master browser functionality. This will prevent these
machines from acting as browse masters. The machines
will still register theirs names on the network.

Thank you both for the info. I have a problem with browsing across subnets.
I did manage to get an XP client to eventually find a workgroup but did not
know which machine provided the browse list. If it was the server then it
certainly took it's time. Just want to be sure that another machine isn't in
the way.
Regards

Browsing across routers and/or WAN links always takes a while to settle
down. It also takes a while for a shutdown machine to drop out of a browse
list. See KB 188001 .

I have now determined that the PDC is the master browser, however the server
is multihomed which means that browsing will not work properly.

As I have 3 NICS at .1.1, .2.1 and .3.1 I need to be sure that WINS is not
bound to the last two NICS. How would I do that please? (Server 2003)

At the moment WINS is showing the _MSBROWSE_ [01h] and master browser [1bh]
entries with IP .3.1. As the majority of the users are on .1.1 how would I
change those entries?

I am planning to release another machine to be the master browser for the
other subnets, specifically .2.1.

regards

Hi Terry,
Open the network connections dialogue box and
click on advanced settings then click on adapters/
bindings. Now unbind file and print sharing and the
client for MS networks from the other NICs. This
may not be a good idea depending on why you have
three NICs in the machine.
