Master Browser Issue with NAS

Hello,

I have a home network using MS Workgroup functionality. I have 3
computers using XP Pro, 1 using MCE 2005 and 1 using Vista. I also
have two NAS on the network.

I have disabled MasterBrowser function from all but one computers
(prior to doing so there would be times when two computers would have
themselves set as the MasterBrowser, creating an issue whereby not all
computers were visible on the network).

All is fine if the 2 NAS are turned off. However, if one or both of
the NAS remain turned on, occassionally one of them will be designated
as the MasterBrowser. When this occurs, certain of the computers on
the network are no longer visible.

My question is, how do I stop the NAS from becoming the
MasterBrowser? One is a SimpleShare and the other is a D-Link NAS.

Thank you.

Best,

Bruce

That could be tricky. What machine becomes the master browser is based on
an election and a number of things are taken into consideration. You will
probably need to get into the network settings on the NAS and see what you
can find. Similar problems crop up when running UNIX systems in workgroups,
and the NAS could well be running a ..nix OS.

Bummer. Thanks for the feedback. I was afraid I'd get that answer.
Wish Microsoft had realized that there may be devices (such as a NAS)
on the network when they designed it.

Bruce

Not likely. This design goes back to the 1980s. They didn't even have
servers on the LAN.

Fair enough. A little updating would be nice, though.

The problem is that the current computer browser service is a legacy
application which depends on Netbios over TCP/IP and goes back to NT.
(Before that it used Netbeui). This is not available in IPv6 so all of this
stuff will have to be replaced by something else. I guess that explains why
it is maintained but not extended at all.
