We receive the following error continuously. Has anyone an
idea how we can stop these errors.

We have edited the registry on the PDC emulator, but we
still have elections

Thanks

"The master browser has received a server announcement
from the computer %servername% that believes that it is
the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_
{6FF21578-ABCF-4EF. The master browser is stopping or an
election is being forced."

But did you disable the "master browser" ability on the machine that thinks
it is the master browser? It is the one that appears in the "computer
%servername%". That is the machine to adjust so that it never thinks it is
the "master browser" again.

Besides,...just because an election was forced doesn't mean the other
machine "wins". Even if your PDC always "wins" and is always the MB,
doesn't mean there won't be elections.

If you are getting these at an unusual rate say every 5
minutes then check to be sure the subnet mask is the
same on the clients and server machines. What exactly
did you edit on the PDC emulator? The PDC emulator
is always the DMB that is set in stone. The DMB or
domain master browser is responsible for gathering the
domain wide list as well as quering all other DMBs for
their browse list and passing back to the SMB or segment
master browser which is responsible for gathering the local
browse list and passing it back to the DMB as well as passing
the complete list back to clients who request it. By default the
PDC will also act as the SMB for it's given endpoint.

Having said all of that which machines are getting these errors?
Which machines are forcing the elections?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. How do you disable the 'Master
Browser' on the other machines?

Hmmm...you had to ask that... :-) I'm not totally sure about it and am not
sure of all the consequenses. It is one of those things I have never done
nor ever felt I needed to, but.....
With newer OS's I believe you just disable the Browser Service in the
Services Applet.
On others like Win98 I think it is a registry entry, but you should check MS
site for that to be sure.

Using the services applet in computer management.

Disabling the computer browse service has been the
topic of much discussion in recent years. I do know
that it's only function is to maintain the browse list
nothing more. Disabling will prevent the machine from
trying to become a master browser and nothing more.
The machine will still send it's host name announcement
packet to the SMB to make it's presence known on the
network. Some argue disabling the service causes too
much overhead. Some argue it's necessary to reduce
network traffic and unnecessary browse elections. Win
9x has a quirk with forcing elections and actually winning
so does W2k or higher machines on an NT 4.0 domain
because of their higher OS criteria. I guess the debate
continues.. <g>

With W2k/XP machines, I would simply disable the browser service on the
would-be browse masters as Phillip and Michael suggested. You can fiddle
with the MaintainServerList registry settings, but I wouldn't recommend it.
As long as you leave enough machines running the browser service to have a
backup browser and meet the recommended one backup browser for each 32
workstations on the subnet, you shouldn't get browser problems. This assumes
you don't have any potential browse masters which are multihomed. This is an
long established browser problem.

If you really want to know what the browser service is doing, you can
use the browstat utility from the support tools.
