Does anyone have any solid solutions to stop this from happening? I have
tried a few different approaches without any luck. I assume but an not
positive that this relates to why my desktop will be connected with just my
first name showing on the start menu yet other times it will show first and
last name.

Thank you!

What other machines are on the LAN? The browser service is a tricky
beast and does some odd things. Who wins a browser election (and what causes
them) can be complicated.

If they are all the same, they all have an equal chance of becoming the
master browser. You can get browser elections when machines start up. If you
have one machine which is always on, you can stop and disable the computer
browser service on the other machines. (That's how I run my home network of
XPs). Of course browsing will fail if that machine is off!

Check the subnet mask on all servers and clients to make
sure they are correct. Also, in a routed environment, routers
forwarding broadcasts via NetBIOS helper applications causes
the same errors.
