Massive delay booting into Win2003

I had just finished configuring a new server running
Windows Server 2003. Everything was running fine. Then
upon restarting I got a blue screen, which was resolved by
installing the hotfix in KB article no. 821138. Summary of
problem/fix:

A Windows Server 2003-based computer may stop responding,
and you may receive a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xD1)
Stop error. This may occur if your computer has a CD-ROM
drive or tape device that is connected to a small computer
system interface (SCSI) controller that uses the
Storport.sys driver. This problem occurs because the SCSI
controller port driver (Storport.sys) contains a code
defect. The Storport.sys driver incorrectly completes a
request twice, and this causes the computer to stop
responding.

So I installed the hotfix and this fixed the above
problem, but it seems to have created a new problem of its
own. Now when I boot up the server it hangs at "preparing
network connections". It will eventually get to the logon
prompt, but this takes over an hour (I don't know exactly
how long it takes - I left it running overnight).

Does anyone know of a fix for this problem? I'm desperate!

Have you checked your Event Viewer?
Have you enabled boot logging as a startup option?

A service or driver is obviously hanging the system.
