Mapping network drive to D-Link NAS unit

We have a peer-to-peer network with 5 Windows XP machines and 3 still running
Windows 98SE. We recently added a D-Link DNS-312H NetworkAttached Storage
unit to act as a central repository for all common data.
No problem with the XP machines but I cannot access the NAS unit from the
Win98 machines.
The NAS unit shows up when in the Network Neighbourhood but, when I click
the icon, I get a box asking for a password and showing the resource as
\\DataNS\IPC$. (I have named the NAS unit as "DataNS") All of the passwords
that I have created are rejected.
After contacting D-Link technical support, I tried mapping a drive directly
to one of the shared folders \\DataNS\Data but get the same problem where all
known passwords are rejected.
Further advice was to use the "Net use" command but still the passwords were
rejected.
Both of the above suggestions proposed that I enter a different username but
neither the map network drive nor the Net use command gave me the option to
specify a user. Is there a newer version of Net Use that allows for a user
name switch?
To quote the last reply from D-Link "Should this problem occur, the only way
to map a drive with Windows 98 would be to use the "net use" command in the
DOS prompt. ... contact Microsoft Technical support.

Select start -> log off

Then log on as a different user. One which is recognised by your new
unit.

Sorry - should have advised that I've already tried that.
In fact, I set up a new user on the Network Storage unit and then created
the same new user on one of the Win98 computers.
Still get "The password is incorrect. Try again" when mapping the drive or
"Error86: The specified network password is not correct" if using the NET USE
command.
(The password is a simple 4 letter lower case word so no issue of unusual
characters etc)
