Hi,
you should give some more information on your configuration.
Ok, i think, when your PCs can ping each other they are liekly to be on
the same subnet.
Have you checked these (very simple) points:
- both PCs must eithr be members of the same NT domain
or be in the same workgroup to see each other directly
- you sometimes must share at least one folder or printer on your server
in order for other PCs to see the computer
- it takes some time (sometimes minutes) to fill the network
neighbourhood with the names of all machines.....
especially when you boot a server:-)
- both PCs must have the "Client for Microsoft Networks" installed for
their netcards
Ok, the above stuff is very basic, but sometimes you just forget it.
It's hard to provide further help without any information.
Another one suggested to try
\\servername
or
\\<ip>
in explorer on the W98 box. That's a good way to start, too.
But if the ip works, and the server name doesn't,
it's most likely to be an NetBIOS issue, and not DNS.
Win2k and later are able to work without NetBIOS and
can use file sharing and so on with DNS only.
But as far as i know, W98 relies on NetBIOS to be
activated.
So go to the properties of the network connection of your
server, choose TCP/IP-properties, then click 'advanced'
or something and search for a tab where is says
'enable NetBIOS via TCP/IP' (or similar stuff).
Make sure it's ON.
HTH
