Mapped Drive on VPN different on client and server

Hello Everyone,

I have a really weird one. Server is Windows 2000 Server SP4, AD, DNS, DHCP,
RAS for VPN's, no DFS. Client is Windows 2000 Pro SP4 connecting to offsite
server via VPN and mapping a drive using \\server\folder. It was working and
then all of a sudden the client side is not the same as the server side.

The client created a new folder and moved around some files. On client side
she can see all changes, on the server side nothing has changed???

From the server I created a new folder called new under \\server\folder and
the client cannot see it????

Client can't see server changes and server can't see client changes.

What the heck is going on? The client has been refreshed, rebooted and
almost rebuilt but nothing. I've disconnected the mapped drive and
reconnected but alas no luck. This one is very odd. Can anyone offer any
advice?

TIA

I don't know. I have never seen that problem. But my solution to Mapped
Drive is always the same answer,..."Stop using them, use UNC based shortcuts
instead". But most people don't want to hear that and get "ticked
off",..so I avoid answering questions on this subject most of the time.

I'll try that, thanks! Is there a specific reason you don't like mapped
drives? What does the UNC shortcut do that's better than the mapped drive?
Just curious. Thanks again.

#1 They timeout and disconnect, then don't always reconnect properly.

#2 They maintain a constant connection that eats up resources,...the timeout
was supposed to help that, but ends up causing #1.

#3 Just in my personal experience they seem slower and less efficient, but I
doubt I can prove that.

UNC Shortcuts only connect the moment you use them. They can be placed
anywhere and they just appear to be a shortcut to a folder. For example you
place them in the User's "My Documents" and they appear to be just another
"folder" inside the My Documents. Using it in the My Documents like that is
a good way to get user to store things on a Server that gets backed up
without them even realizing that is what they are doing,..to them, they were
just placing it in a folder under My Documents.
