How Many Computers??

I don't have a problem, just a curious question.

I will probably never have any more than three or four computers running off
my Linksys WRT54G, but I was wondering - theoretically how many computers
can operate off this router at one time?

Tks

The router of this class can handle 255 computers through DHCP. I read in a
post onetime on the wireless side the max amount is around 20. I don't know
for sure what the number is on the wireless. I would like to get an answer
on that one myself.

There are 256 addresses available in most inexpensive routers, the last
three digits of the IP address: 0 to 255

0 is a reserved address.
One of the addresses is used by the router.
That leaves 254 addresses available.

FWIW, I have an 8-port hub daisy-chained off my USR8054. The router doesn't
serve DHCP, as I couldn't make it assign a known address to a given client,
so I use another machine as a DHCP server. It appears to support 253
wired clients. I couldn't find out how many wireless clients it supports.

You forgot that 255 is the broadcast address, leaving 253 usable
addresses. ;-)

the question is "who has them now?"

It supports 253 clients in toto. Virtually all consumer
switches/routers do. Of course, if you want more IPs, stick another
router in with a different netmask, and bridge between the two
networks.
