I've recently taken the step to try to install (Mandrake 9.1) Linux on
my girlfriend's PC since she's had nothing but problems with it since
she bought it a year ago. It was installed with Windows ME which I've
reinstalled a million times, but she still gets a "blue screen of death"
pretty often, so I decided to try Linux out.
The computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo 600 and came with an internal
modem. I believe it's what goes under the name of "Winmodem" or "Audio
modem riser" card, and the one in question is a Smartlink/Aztech
CNR-2800 W (
http://www.aztech.com.sg/products/cnr2800.htm).
I've been told that it won't work under Linux, but I have actually found
several drivers here and there for Linux, so I'm still hoping.....
The problem is that I really don't know anything about compiling and all
of that "hacker" stuff in Linux, and it seems I have to do that kind of
thing to install it according to other people online. And even then
they're not sure if it'll work, so there are a lot of uncertain factors
here. I've tried to follow the instructions I've been given, but so far
had little success, so I'm hoping to find someone here who's got the
same modem and has had success in installing/using it on a PC running
Mandrake Linux. Anyone?
