Please advise the make and model of your dsl modem and whether it has a
built-in router or whether there is a separate router between the modem
and the computer and if so, the make and model of the router.

The set-up is different depending on whether you are using a usb
connection or an ethernet card and whether or not there is a router in
the hardware connection.

Mandrake or Linux has nothing to do with ADSL. It is the modem that does
that. It translates either from ethernet or USB to ADSL. (ethernet is far
far easier). Now many ADSL services ALSO use weird authentication
mechanisms and mechanisms to tell the service with provider to use. Three
are bridged, PPPoA and PPP0E (in order to reasonableness.) the first is if
there is only one provider, and is what is used in Canada (the telco is the
only ADSL ISP) the third is an abortion that should have been quietly
killed at birth, but wasn;t.

Most modems sold in the country have pppoa or pppoe already included in the
modem-- set up via a web page.

If it is an ethernet to adsl modem, you use dhcp to get the address for
your system from the modem, then use a browser to query the modem (using
the address supplied in the booklet that came with the modem) and setup on
the web page supplied. But you give us no information at all. For all we
know you forgot to buy an adsl modem. So more info is necessary.
