I'm having trouble making a roaming profile mandatory. If I rename User.dat
to User.man, a new copy of User.dat arrives from the local pc at log on to
take its place. I have tried to rename the copy on the local PC but am told
I cannot do this even though I have admin rights.

TIA

The first time I tried this I was working remotely from the account and
changing it on the server , could this account for the problem?
I tried again logged directly into the server and renamed User.Dat to
User.man and it took the change when I logged on to the account. Only
difference was the wallpaper had been replaced. I could still delete/create
links and folders though.
I then copied the local version of User.Dat and replaced it for the remote
one and renamed it to .Man. This remembered the wallpaper but I am still
able to make changes to the desktop. This should not be happening?

TIA

hi,
to create a mandatory profile, go to computer properties->advanced
tab->click user profiles choose what profile do you want and click copy to ,
browse a location (a share is better if you want to use on multiple computer)
and don't forget to click and permited to use. after you copy the profile you
can rename the ntuser.dat to ntuser.man

Hello Dragos,

That is what I have been doing , I created the profile on the client PC,
logged off and from another account I copied the profile, as below, to a
share on the server which was set to everyone at share level. The share
contained the user's profile folder which has inheritence blocked, the user
is the owner and has full control as does the administrator. At log on, the
wallpaper dissapears (it can be seen in the preview pane in
displayproperties>desktop) and selecting it again does not make it appear on
the desktop but I can add links and folder to the desktop.
There are strange things happening on this setup, I tried to alter an IP
address on the client PC yesterday (as admin) to be told I had insuffient
rights! I also tried the built in Administrator account with the same
result.
As an aside is there a limit to the number of simultaneous logons to W2003
server? I need to allow 20 "users" to logon at the same time.

Many thanks

TWK

hi,
and the link and the other settings are saved on logoff? because the
manadatory profile permit you to create but the settings aren't saved on exit.
yes you can limit the concurent sessions by :
cotrol panel->licensing and choose what do you want but be aware that could
be switch only 1 time from per server /deveice or user or viceversa.

if you ask for terminal server that will be done on terminal services
configuration/rdp-properties/network adapter and choose how many remote
connections can be permitetd.

Many thanks Dragos,

Yes the links etc., are saved on exit and are stiil there at next login.
I need to have concurrent sessions as my "users" are actually yeargroups in
a junior school. The "yeargroup" (20 concurrent session) login and are
presented with the links to the progs they are allowed to access and a UNC
link on the desktop to a folder that contains all the children's work
folders.

again, many thanks
