I know this sounds like a weird thing to want, but let me explain the
situation. At home we have a number of Windows desktops (plus my Linux
desktop) and all users want to listen to certain Real Audio radio streams.
The problem is that I hate the Real Audio (Windows) software with a
vengeance. It's the most pitiful excuse for a media program I've seen. I
tried to install various versions of this Real One crap on some Windows
desktops today. It wasted my time (registration, unchecking tons of boxes
to disable features that scare me), and I ended up with machines running
hung Real Audio processes at 99% CPU usage. So much for giving Real Audio
another chance (now I remember why I started hating this product).
Anyway...
Winamp works great, and I would love to get Winamp to play the Real Audio
streams. I've set up icecast servers before successfully (for streaming in
mp3 or ogg vorbis format) and know they work fine with Winamp/XMMS. My
question is, can I some how configure my linux server to decode the Real
Audio stream and then re-encode into a proper format for LAN streaming? Is
anyone aware of a command-line linux program that can decode real audio
streams? I can't delve into X because my server doesn't have the resources.
Any help greatly appreciated! If I come up with a working system, I will
definitely document the process and share it with everyone. A big 'fsck
you' to Real One.
