Making a PC into a router - just curious

I'm curious, is it possible to put 4 NICs into a Win 98 (SE) machine
and use it as a router? I'm guessing it is, by assigning one NIC as
the share one, which is connected to the incoming line from the modem.
Then, install internet connection sharing and use each NIC to connect
to the 3 other machines. Would this work? If so, would each NIC need
different IP settings?

Before 20 people respond with, "Just go spend $10 on a router," please
note that I know that's the simple, easy, and cheap way. I simply
want to know if this is possible. Any answers are greatly
appreciated!!!

In Win 98 (SE), ICS can only share the Internet connection over one
NIC. In Windows Me, it can share the Internet connection over two
NICS, which use different subnets in their IP settings There's
nothing built into either version to do more than that. You'd have to
find non-Microsoft software to do it.

Windows XP has a "network bridge" capability that can combine multiple
physical NICs into a single logical network, with one subnet. I've
written a web page with details:
