From what I've found on the internet, the MTAs that are most used are
Sendmail, Postfix, qmail and Exim.

It would appear that Sendmail is a bit old and slow and difficult, and
that the other three are better alternatives. Of those three, which
would be the most used? I would have guessed Postfix, qmail and Exim
in that order. Am I right?

Yup.

How dare you insult the sacred honour of Sendmail? It is
indeed very very finnikity to setup (almost a labour of love),
but it is the most wonderously configurable piece of kit in
the world IMHO. Ages ago I considered switching to Exim
or similar but I felt this would betray the fine sendmail heritage.

To answer your question though, I /think/ that Sendmail is
the most popular (just because it comes with all the distros).

For 'major' or 'main' servers (proper companies etc...) then
probably Postfix but I dunno for certain.

Use sendmail - it rocks.

Cheers,

Dave.

For small sites, I recommend Exim. Its easy to learn, and very clear to
configure. Get the O'Reilly book.

Exim is very popular (or at least, very common), as its the default MTA
for Debian. I love exim, it restored my sanity with its eximconfig
program (Sendmail had previously scared me bad when I was a newbie).

Sendmail isn't slow, but it is old and difficult, with a spotty security
history. It is, however extremely configurable and almost omnipresent as
far as available on *nix platforms goes.

I third the motion. Exim. The info pages are incredibly thorough, with
them, the book from OREILLY, and a subscription to its very active
mailing list, you are there.

It has way more features than I'll ever need...

And more capacity...

Not sure why it is important to you which of the three programs is the
"most used" unless you are writing a school paper or doing market
research. However, I've been using Postfix for sometime and it works
beautifully and was relatively easy to configure and get going. Has been
super-stable since with virtually no maintenance.

So, if you're just looking for recommendations based on user experience,
there's mine.
