Folks,

I'm on BT Broadband. I've got two computers, one at home and one a laptop.
I'd like the option to download my BT email from my computer at home. I've
already got a mydns domain set-up for ftp server access, so would like some
sort of email server also.

I've got cygwin installed, so a unix mail server may do the job.

Basically the home computer will collect my BT mail and hold it on a mail
server. Here I can read it from the home computer, but also download/read
it from my laptop when out in the field.

I'd also like to set-up an address (E-Mail Removed) so people can send emails
direct to my home pc without having to go through BT as the BT account only
has a 50 meg limit. And if someone wants to send 6 10meg emails i'm in
trouble!

Any ideas?

TIA,

gbnews

Quite honestly, I think you'd be best to get yourself another machine and
run such a mail server properly - under eg Linux.

Failing that, have a look at http://software602.com/products/ls/

"Only"??

If someone wants to send six 10MB emails they really should find a better
way of sending the data.

If you want to run a Linux mail server you'd be better off running it
properly under Linux.

Alternatively there are some decent free Windows-based mail servers
such as Mercury and MailEnable.

I agree! But you'll be surprised at the amount of companies that stop data
going out on ports. Sometimes the only way to get data out is via email.
:-(

So set up an FTP server that runs on port 25/80/110? Just a thought.

I've got something else running on port 80. Could do a web based upload
thingy I suppose.

Cheers.

A real Linux box will do all this and more. I have one here on my home
network. I collects mail from my ISP it also receives mail directly from
my other mail services using SMTP. Also outgoing mail is delivered
directly to the end mailbox, not via my ISP. I could allow external access
via POP3 web or IMAP, but I have no need for that. It also provides
external FTP and HTTP services.

You just have to learn how to set it up. It really is well worth it.
I use RedHat Linux on this box, but which distro you use is your choice.
There's plenty of help in the Internet. It really runs rings round
Windows, even on old hardware.

On a similar theme can any reccomend a simple, easy (maybe even free) smtp
server. I don't want all the bells and whistles on Lansuite, just a simple,
reliable SMTP server (W2k)

Thanks
