I was asked if a Asante 5 port Ethernet 10/100 switch
could be linked via the spare port direct into a 24 port
Access/Switch to expand the network for Apple Macs?

If it is possible is a crossover cable required or straight ?

TIA

There's nothing special about a Mac in this respect.

To connect two switches you need a crossover somewhere. If one or the
other has a port marked "uplink" (often shared with another port so you
can't use both) this is crossed over so you can connect the uplink port on
one switch to a regular port on the other with a straight patch cable.
Otherwise connect two regular ports with a crossover cable.

Regards, Ian
