Hi Bruce!
Your server is set to require Microsoft Encrypted Authentication by default,
which is something that Macs don't do natively. Microsoft does create a User
Authentication Module (UAM) to install on the Macs to allow them to
authenticate users to the server with stronger methods. This is not an
Active Directory issue.
I'll refer you to this page on Microsoft's website for detailed information

You can choose to use either the UAM for a more secure authentication
between Macs and the server or you can set your server to allow Apple clear
text passwords using the Computer Management module.
