Machine not accessible

Help! I have a notebook on the network (XP pro). The notebook can 'see'
network resources; email, shared folders on other machines, etc. However,
when trying to connect TO the notebook from other machines, the following
message appears (after trying to connect for a few seconds):

\\MACHINENAME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

- - - - - -

The computer has an IP address, as assigned by our DHCP. The machine cannot
be 'pinged' from other machines. I have tried assigning a static address and
that had no affect. I also 'shared' the entire C drive on the notebook;
again, no luck.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks!
Walt

Sounds like you have the XP or some other firewall enabled. If this is SP2
you can enable an exception for file and printer sharing.

I tried that. Actually, I turned OFF the Windows Firewall and nothing
changed. This computer didn't have this problem until recently. I can't
think of anything that's changed!

Can you ping the IP address of the notebook from another machine? If so,
what happens if you run \\IPaddressofNotebook?

If you cannot ping the IP address of the notebook and the its XP firewall is
disabled, then most likely the notebook has some third party security
software installed which is blocking access.

When I ping the notebook, the response times out. FROM the notebook, I can
ping other machines on the network successfully. I asked the user about any
special firewall software and he said that there was none loaded on the
machine.

He may be wrong. If it is XP-SP2 it already has it loaded and it is on by
default. You don't have to "load" it for it to be there.

difference.

How about pasting the results of an "ipconfig /all" into the next post? Do
it both from the problem machine and do it from one that works fine.

I don't see anytihg wrong with the Active Nics. The Laptop has one that
says "Media disconnected". Manually disable that Nic and reboot. See what
happens.
