Mac on a PC network

I have been running 3 PC's on a wired network running XP pro with no
problems. I have just got a new Mac notebook and it picks up the network
with no problem and can transfer files to the 3 PCs with no problem. However
the 3 pc's do not pick up the Mac on the network even if it is connected by
cable or wireless to the router.
I have tried using XP on the MAC using Parallels but when I do that it does
not pick up the network at all though internet connection to the router is
ok.
Can anyone help?
thanks
Alan

What happens if one of the PCs opens a DOS prompt (Start | Run | cmd) and
then tries:

1. ping mac

2. ping 1.2.3.4

3. net view \\mac

4. net view \\1.2.3.4

where "mac" is the hostname of the Mac and "1.2.3.4" is its IP address.

I wonder what protocol the Mac uses for file and printer sharing? Maybe it's
not SMB (implied by net use / net view, I think). It could be that the Mac
is clever enough to know about net use/view even though it's not its native
sharing protocol, but Windows doesn't know about the Mac sharing protocol. I
woner if there's an additional downloadable Mac protocol for Windows.

Change the Sharing options in the system settings. By default, access to
almost everything is turned off.

This may help - if you haven't done it already. On the Mac, go to
Applications : Utilities : Directory Access and in SMB/CIFS make sure
that you've entered your workgroup name.
