I have finally mangaged to configure my Windows 2003 server PC so I can connect from both OS 9 and OS X Macs. However I have a file view problem. If I copy files from OS X Mac on to W2003 server when viewed from OS 9 client I can see the files but the icons are not recognised by the same native program. The same happens from OS 9 and then viewed in OS X. Are there some extra permissions I need to share on the W2003 server or could it be an AppleShare IP issue?

Sounds like an AppleShare issue. Permissions on Windows just dictates
accessibility - nothing to do with what app is associated with an icon or
file extension (assuming that's what you mean by "icons" not recognized, but
rather the file extension.

In Windows, if an app is associated with a specific extension, such as Word
is to a .doc extension, then the blue "W" icon is associated with it. If
viewing a file thru a mapped drive from a machine that has Word installed,
and the machine you are looking at does not have Word installed, you will
still see the blue "W" icon from your machine because its installed and
associated on your machine. That;s why I believe it's an AppleShare issue.
