All off you read and think ....
is this a legitimate way to stop you getting a MAC number

seems my isp(prodigynet) has disappeared from the face of the earth.
Been with them for about 4 years on adsl and all was alright until about 6
months ago.
Then my ping and connection started having problems and to resolve the
matter I tried to get in touch with them.
I emailed them quite a few times, phoned them, still no response.
All I needed to know was if it was their problem or BT's.
I decided to move on to another provider.
I have asked for my MAC by email and recorded delivery letter, but still no
joy.
No one answers the support phone or the sales phone.
If they are going out of business well ok but at least let us punters know.
Could it be that this is a way to prevent me getting my MAC.
Its all in the hands of OFCOM now, so if anyone hears anything about
Prodigynet please post here.

Please....Please ...answer this mail

anyone on prodigynet

The idea of the MAC number is so that you don't have to suffer a break in
service of more than about 2 hours while they do the changeover from one ISP
to another. If you're willing to accept a break of about 2 weeks from
broadband, you can just cancel and go and order broadband as a "brand new"
(as opposed to a migrating) customer from any other ISP you want.

And if he can't contact the ISP, how does he organise the cancellation
of broadband...?

And if the line isn't released by the current ISP, how can it receive an
ADSL service from another one?

>critcher said.... yes I am still paying them and getting a service,

however, it seems as if the isp does not acknowledge your calls the what can
you do.
I have been in touch with OFCOM and they are looking in to it.

I have sent a letter, loads of emails to support and sales, where do you go
from here.
What will happen next is I will stop payments and hope they dont stop me
from using my line with a tag.
Is this possible ?

Without the old ISP releasing the line you can't get a new ISP. The method you
suggest may also cost an extra £47 or so.

Having said that, he may then be able to go to moneyclaim.gov.uk and get
a judgement against the ISP for his costs incurred by their failing to
respond to repeated requests.

If they don't respond to the claim, he wins by default - he just has to
get the money out of them then.

A recent case had a bloke whose engine was damaged by contaminated Tesco
fuel (not the recent spate), and repeated attempts to get them to pay
the repair bill were ignored. Eventually he got bailiffs in, they seized
£60,000 worth of alcohol and Tesco suddenly got around to paying him !

I would think twice before stoping payments.

You may then be in the wrong.
