Start , run , type cmd
At the command prompt type ipconfig /all

This will give the physical addresses of all network adaptors

Do you need to do that for a wired connection..? I've only ever used it
for wireless connections.

That depends on the required level of paranoia.

I've worked in environments where nothing is allowed on the lan
without it's mac address being registered, but that kind of
environment doesn't typically allow wires either.

So if you are that paranoid, use fibre.

It happens that Ivor Jones formulated :

Its an old Belkin wireless unit up on a pole which I'm using to provide
a wifi link of 0.5km. I had set it up via a wifi link, via my main
router, then locked the Belkin down - shortly after which I added a
wired LAN cable from this PC to the main router and disabled the wifi
at this PC. I then lost all access to the Belkin completely. I was
actually on the point of bringing the Belkin down off the pole to do a
factory reset, until I found out that the far end of the link still had
its Internet access.

Not until that point did I realise that I had not included the MAC of
this PC's wired LAN card in the Belkin's list before locking it down -
which was the reason for my original question.

Not all routers are wired.
