Hi,

I will shortly be moving to Virgin Media broadband and would like to
know if i really need to get a MAC code from my current supplier?

My supplier at present is Orange and have been advised that they take
forever to get a MAC code. Can i just cancel my Orange Broadband and
start using the Virgin? They overlap Virgin Is installed and Orange
Broadband will be cancelled after the installation date.

Hope someone can shed some light...

Anthony

If you're going to be using cable broadband on VM, as opposed to their
ADSL, you do not need a MAC from Orange.

Hi Anthony

Yes, you must contact Orange and ask them for a MAC. You should not ask for
your service to be stopped. Orange should provide the MAC to you within five
working days. The MAC is valid for a period of 30 days from the date it is
issued. You should then present the MAC to your Virgin Media who will then
process the request and inform you of the transfer date. You should find out
from Virgin whether there is likely to be any downtime or loss of service
during the transfer process.

Just seen the reply for Jono. The above assumes that you are moving from one
ADSL provider to another. Jono is right, if you are moving to cable no MAC
is required.

I am leaving Virgin and it took 11 minutes listening to their recordings
before I got an operator on a 0845 number to discuss the timing of the
monthly bill so as to work out when to give notice. I joined NTL 8 years ago
but since the merger things have got rather bad. I was reasonably happy with
the bundle 1 option apart from the slow connections at times but things
changed when the phone service cps failed and I found out that you had to
make premium rate calls to report faults and even then had to get the
assistance of BT to sort it out after 7 days with no phone. When the lot
failed recently I didn't even bother them but just rang BT. So hopefully I
will have better service at the post office, it will be about £10 per month
cheaper anyway.

Yabbut, if he cancels with Orange, he'll have to pay another £47 or so
to RE-enable his ADSL broadband connection down the phone line.

He'd be far better off finding a decent ISP.

Orange and Virgin ? He sounds like a masochist !

For the OP's benefit .....

Out of the 2, I think I'd use The Post Office!
