Mac clients on Server 2003

Just set up a Windows Server 2003 as a file server. All
machines on the network running Windows and Mac OS 9 can
see and log into the server with out any problems.

However, when I try to log into the server with a Mac G4
running (Panther) OS X, Server sends back an error "Could
not connect to the server because the name or password is
incorrect." Yet when I use the same user name and password
from a Windows machine or a Mac running OS 9 no problem
logging into the server.

What settings do I need to change on the Windows server
2003 to allow the G4's in?

Thanks,

John Hill

Hi John!

What are you using in your connect string to the server? Does it begin with
"afp://" or "smb://"?

AFP is the Apple Filing Protocol and will work with your server's File
Services for Macintosh. Use this over SMB when you have down-level Mac
clients that can only use AFP. You'll avoid the "appearance" of file
corruption when exchanging files between the two types of clients.

SMB is the Server Message Block protocol and will work with your server's
Windows networking services.

If you're using SMB, you'll need to edit the default Security Policy for
either your server or the domain to allow non-signed clients to connect.
You'll find this under Local Policies --> Security Options --> Microsoft
Network client: Digitally sign communications (always). The SMB protocol
included with Panther does not support signing.

Hope this helps! bill
