I am obviously missing a trick here. Who and how does one contact BT
Broadband (not Yahoo) to obtain a MAC number?

Tiscali - dialup speeds at Broadband prices, see

AOL - the unlimited ISP of choice for heavy downloaders.

Contact the BT broadband support desk. They will be happy to give you a MAC
code

They will give you one .... eventually .... after asking a tonne of
questions and trying to convince you to stay. Why they cannot just give you
the MAC code via email when you as is beyond me. It would be so much easier
and less error prone, but of course they wouldn't have the chance of trying
to put you off migrating then.

Yes, I Emailed Wanadoo for a MAC code, and of course have been told to
phone the support line (at a cost).

I have tremendous packet loss (or great connection) with BT Yahoo -
when it works, it's amazing, but more often than not it's dire and
almost unusable. Why did you move? I was thinking of moving to Zen,
but as most of the kit from my house to the main ISP central is al BT,
any problems between me and that would still be there if I move.

But Zen apparently is keener to get any problems sorted out, unlike the
BT yahoo/broadband/openworld numpties who don't understand anything &
just work from a script & if it isn't on the script then you don't get
very far..

Don't want to give too many details as I work there but Tech Suppor
for BT Broadband is not supplied by BT employees. It is a 3rd part
company.
If you want a the MAC code phone BT on 0800800030 - as stated elsewher
you will of course get loads of hassle before you get it

That number works great. Answered straight away. Just a few minutes
chat, an offer that could only be refused and the MAC code was given
to me.
