I currently have a BT voyager 2100 modem and have two wireless laptops
connected to it, they work fine. The thing is, I want my Mac to be
able be able to share this internet connection. The Mac is a desktop
PC so want to be able to connect this via network cable.

As I have no idea about Macs (especially the networking side) I was
wondering if anyone could help me?

Thanks in advance,

Will Bonner-May

Well, if you have a spaer Ethernet connector you should be able to just
plug it in and go. You might need to log out/in to reset the addresses,
but that's about it. Assuming you have OSX of course.

You don't say what Mac you have though, that could make a difference.
All later Macs have PCI slots, so a card is a possibility, and the G5's
have BlueTooth already installed.

Modern Macs (I have a couple of silver ones) all auto-detect whether
the network cable is cross-over or straight-through, but since you
don't state how old yours is, get a straight-through one to be on the
safe side.

IP address &c will be issued by the Voyager, and the easiest way to
configure the Mac is to switch it on.

If for some reason the Intarnet doesn't work, then check that
"Configure IPv4" in Applications > System Preferences > Network >
Built-In Ethernet is set to "Using DHCP". I can confirm no weird &
inexplicable issues running Mac OS X.3 against a wireless Voyager.

HTH,

The simplest thing is to connect the mac's ethernet port to the router
in the usual way ie with a cable. If you want to go wireless, try to
find a wireless adapter that supports Macs (Belkin's USB ones
apparently do). I'm not aware of any PCI wireless cards that support
OS9 or OSX though its possible that the latter is now supported.

Its identical to everything else's networking, don't worry.

With both OS9 and OSX, all macs from the G3 upwards (ie about 10 years
ago...) are perfectly capable of automatic config. Just ensure they're
set to get their IP from the DHCP server.

On the subject of macs, I've connected two powerbooks (both on 10.3.5)
to a D-link hub, then to a zoom x3 router/modem. No problem sharing the
internet connection, but I can't get the macs to see each other, which
I'd have thought I could have. No problem if I just connect them
directly via ethernet cables- then they see each other fine. Any idea
what I'm doing wrong?

Depends what you mean by "see each other". Can you ping from one to
the other? Is it just filesharing that doesn't work? Check that the IP
addresses are in the same subnet, that the subnet masks are correct
etc.

That all seems OK. When I just hook them up directly via ethernet cable,
I can file share fine, but they seem to be invisible to each other when
connected to the router. Searching for the computers via their IP
address etc. doesn't work.

Cheers Mark, will try this later then.
