MAC address blocked in domain.

I have a few laptops that are connected to my domain. If I take one on the
raod and connect to another network all is fine until I bring it back to my
network and it fails to connect. DHCP works but once it has an address it
will not receive data. Wireless connection woul still work but wired
connection fails.

Work Around: Change the MAC address and disable/enagble and it connects just
fine.

Is there any reason that the MAC address would not be allowed to connect to
a domain? No filters or wireless problems. Could the computer account in AD
be corrupted?

Hello,

does it work if you reboot the laptop ?
what does display ipconfig /all ?
Does it appear if you do not activate the wifi, but just connect on another
ethernet network ?

Any wifi tool installed ?
Network card order may be changed when activating the wifi

Reboot does not do anything except get an IP address if set to DHCP or even
if you reserve by mac address so DHCP does work. Ipconfig /all shows all of
the proper information for DNS. IP, Gateway etc but release and renew will
not work unless you reboot ot disable/enable the NIC.

WiFi will not work at all if NIC is enabled but works fine if the NIC is
disabled. Once I change the NIC's MAC address everything works great. I can
take it home and plug it in and the NIC and wireless work just fine.

WiFi disabled and nothing works. No tools installed that have helped and how
can I tell if there is a network card order?

It all narrows down to the MAC on our Domain.

Think about it.
Only under special circumstances does the laptop not connect. How could
that be a AD error or corruption?

Same circumstances point to a local to the laptop issue not your network.

Are you doing dhcp reservations? if not, mac has nothing to do with it.
after all you would let any mac connect right?

Not to ask a dumb question but did you check out/disable the firewall
settings? Perhaps the user clicked trust local network when connected at a
hotel in answer to the firewall question. And now on a different ip subnet
the firewall is blocking. Change the mac and the firewall sees this as a
whole new connection.

What operating system is the laptop running?
What other software is installed on the laptop? Are there any wireless
config tool, or any other 3rd party non-Windows tools installed such as a
3rd party firewall, etc?

If Vista, the NIC will fall asleep and get disabled if not being used. It
will come back up if you plug the laptop in. I've seen this before.

Dell tools or ibm do the same. It keep a lot of battery power to disable the
NIC.

I was thinking if the laptop was removed incorrectly from the domain or
removed for a long time that it would think that the account already exists
and would not let it re-connect or re-authenticate.

Updates:

DHCP works for any MAC address assigned to the laptop through DHCP or
reservation. Once the address is assigned it stop receiveing with no other
errors.

Currently I am running Windows XP pro. no firewall or antivirus installed.
No third party wireless programs installed either.

The laptop is always powered or on a docking station. Either way it still
fails.

If AD is not failing the what else in the Server or Workstation would block
based on MAC address alone.

Is it possible that someone has tried to set up network access control or
MAC assignment on the switch?

WOW, Never thought of that one. Didn't even know I had a setup on that.

Static MAC address set to specific ports on an old 3COM com switch. Remove
static setting and reset MAC on laptop and it connected.

Thanks for the tip.
