I am looking into setting up a Linux thin client computer lab at my high
school and from what I have read so far the LTSP has almost everything that
I'm looking for. The school currently has a computer lab and as well as a
computer or two in most of the classrooms on campus running Windows as well
as quite a few Mac's. I'm looking for a client that can run over the TCP-IP
network on campus to be able to log in from a Windows or Mac workstation and
get the same GUI, desktop, home folder, etc that the students will have in
the computer lab itself. This would enable students to work on their
assignments from anywhere on campus, and at anytime during the day and not
just for the hour that their teacher has reserved the computer lab.

With Windows 2000 Terminal Server, I can set up a web page that gives me
access to my W2K desktop, no matter where I login from. Of course, the
licenses alone for a W2K server and MS Office would cost more than this
whole project with Linux.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Charles

The k12ltsp project has everything you need to boot diskless clients from
the server so they come up running only X on the client with the desktop
and all apps running on the server. However, you can do the same with
anything that can run X. For example, on windows you can download
the free Cygwin tools including Xfreee, then from a bash prompt type
Xwin -query server to get a remote desktop. If you have OS-X on the Macs
you can download the apple version of X and do the same. The k12ltsp
distribution also activates a vnc server that starts a new X session as you
connect so you can use any vnc viewer as a client too.
