LPT1 connection problem

I was trying to get my Laptop connected to my computer
through LPT1 because my serial cable shorted out. It
brought down a thing that said that I could do it, but it
stayed on connecting to whatever and never connected. I
don't have Windows ME on my laptop, only Windows 98 SE, so
could that be the problem? And I know it is probably a
stupid question, but can I have a network connection with
just 2 computers, 2 modems and a phone line? If not, that
would be a cool thing for the next Windows XP update,
maybe even for the 64 bit OS. Any help at all is
appreciated, and if you have a question to ask me just e-
mail me.
