Lousy dial-up but apparently OK for broadband

Using dialup I never get better than 33600 - and there is no DACS or
anything else to cause such a slow speed - plus I would estimate I am
within half a mile of the exchange.
So I was very dubious that the line would pass the test for
intsllation of broadband - but it appears to have done so. Pipex have
told me that BT have dont the tests, its ok, and connection is next
wednesday.
So how come a line which cannot produce better speeds than 33600 for
dial-up can be ok for broadband - or should I be anticipating equally
poor broadband performance?

ADSL line's don't work the same as regular one's that are used for
broadband. However, I would still be a little sceptical until you actually
get it installed (I used to get 52000 on dial-up, am now getting 1-200,000
on alledged BB and my exchange is only 5 minutes down the road)

Dialup uses a different frequency range, so it's quite possible for there to
be some interference in that range, but not in the ADSL range.

I used to get 28-33k connections with dialup; I now have 1 Mb ADSL which can
consistently get 110-120 KB/sec downloading, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Even slower speed on a computer in another room.

Do BT do a genuine check on the actual individual line quality- or is
it just a matter of a paper-check, distance from exchange, copper
wires, no devices fitted etc and then assuming that it will be OK?

Once an order is placed a proper check is carried out.

If BT say you can get 500K you will be able to get that service/speed - its
*very rare* that a installation has to be removed once its installed (due to
poor line quality)

BT would prefer to fail you now if they thought the line woudn't support the
service you have ordered.

Sunil

Are you sure the modem is capable of more than 33600?

Peter

If possible try the modem on another phone line.
From what you've said so far that may be the problem.
