lost tcp/ip network connnection

Was able to connect my digital camera and download pics
but then somehow lost connection. When I start computer,
dialog window comes up that says "TCP/IP network
connection not installed". This is on HP Pavillion
computer running Windows 98. How do I re-establish this
connection. Backup disk from HP req that I either reload
to orig config or re-format hard drive and re-install orig
programs. Would like to not have to save all data files
and re-install all programs that did not come with
computer. Can't I re-install or re-establish TCP/IP
network connection? HELP!!
