lost network connection after sleep mode

I have two computers networked via a twisted cable. Up
until a week ago, if either went into sleep mode I could
waken it (them) and they would automatically establish the
network connection. SOmething has changed so that now if
one goes into sleep mode, the network connection is lost
and I have to reboot to re-establish the connection.

What do I need to do to return to my former setup?
