Lost MAC address?

I have one of those ultra-cheap RTL-8129 NICs in a home machine. This
morning it refused to get on the network. Checking the server logs I find:

Mar 6 07:20:37 tooth dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:00:00:00:00:00 via eth0:
network SEINERNET: no free leases

WTF? It looks like the NIC lost its MAC address.... I don't think this
is configurable in any way....

Is this card cooked? Stary cosmic ray hit it overnight?

What does

ifconfig -a

report about the card?

Maybe the warranty period is over ...

What you don't tell us is the actual MAC address it's now reporting. If it's
FF:FF:FF:FF etc then its ROM is screwed. Try this:

service network stop
mii-tool -R
service network start
