Hello. Can someone offer any advice about how to fix internet
connectivity to our Small Business Server?

After doing some minor router configuration this morning, I found that
I had lost internet connectivity on all our desktops and servers.

I undid the changes I made to the router (they were very minor --
nothing that should have caused a problem), but still no internet. I
was able to ping yahoo.com from the router, so I know it's connected.

After some fiddling, I found that if I set (on the server) the
forwarding IP address for external DNS inquiries to our router/gateway
IP, I could get full connectivity on the desktops, and partial on the
servers.

It seems that the server is able to resolve external DNSs, but not
actually find them. Traceroute and ipconfig results are below.

Again, the desktops work fine. Additionally, I am able to access the
server remotely from home (email, company intranet, remote desktop,
etc.).

Thanks for your help,

Joseph

can you ping a public ip from the server? If yes, you ping yahoo.com? if you can ping the public ip but not yahoo.com, I would check the internal DNS settings first.

Robert,

Thanks for your reply. No, I cannot ping a public IP from the server.
However, the domain name is resolving.

Joseph

Hello

Are you running ISA server on the "all-in-one" machine? (this is so not
recommended). Try to create a rule:
Allow, all internet traffic, from local host and internal network to
external, for all users. See if it works. Also check the connectivity
between client computers and DNS. (ping, nslookup, netstat). Who resolve DNS
name? (nslookup -qtype)

Marian,

Thanks for your reply.

I am not running ISA server.

I checked connectivity between client computers and the DNS as you
suggested. The DNS server and IP address is indeed correct
(192.168.1.12, sbs.ourdomain.com). The client computers can access the
web just fine. It's only the DNS computers I'm having trouble with.

I find it extremly strange that the DNS computers can resolve external
domain names correctly, but it just can't ping them. I will repost the
traceroute and ipconfig information from earlier, since it seems to
have disappeared from this thread.

Thanks again for your replies. It hasn't been a big deal yet over the
weekend, but as Monday morning draws closer, I'm becoming more and more
concerned. Yikes!

Thanks,
Joseph

Hello again,
You didn't answer one of my questions: who resolve the DNS? nslookup -qtype
Also, can you ping the GW? try smaller steps.. everything is working
'inside' your LAN? If so, then you should concentrate on the router or on
the DNS itself. Try to verify the firewall rules on the DNS. Does the GW
respond to ping commands from DNS?

Marian,

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>nslookup -qtype
Default Server: sbs.ourdomain.com
Address: 192.168.1.12

You were right: it was the router.

It's a Linksys RV082 with dual WAN ports. When I moved the DSL modem
cable from WAN1 to WAN2, everything worked fine. I suspect hardware
problems, or maybe an incorrect config setting that can't be accessed
from the router's web interface. I'll have to call Linksys about that.

Thank you for your help!
Joseph
