What could the problem be when our Windows 98 machines are randomly losing
connection to the Windows 2003 server?

They lose connection when they try to print. It then asks for a password
for the printer. It only happens occasionally. Sometimes it happens when
they print from the accounting software. Sometimes they're just printing an
email from Outlook. When this happens, we have them reboot to sign back on,
and try again. How do we prevent it? So far we have no problems with
Windows 2000, but we only have a couple of 2000 users. Most are on Windows
98. We can't afford to upgrade everyone to 2000/XP at this time.

We did have a problem with users losing all their printer definitions and
having to reboot to get them back. Changing spool settings to RAW seems to
fix that.

Hi,

it´s because a setting in the 2K3 domain controller policy.
In Active Directory Users and Computers, rightclick om Domain Controllers,
Group Policy. Edit the default domain controller policy. Under Computer
Config, Security Options (something, don´t have any computer around to look
at), there is a setting called something like Default disconnect client = 15
min. Change this to 0.

/GK

No, this setting is already zero. We are also not using Terminal Services.
Any other ideas?

Have you also tried to disable SMB signing? In the same GPO as mentioned.

How would this work? If SMB was an issue wouldn't users not be able to sign
on? Everyone is signed on, they just get randomly disconnected throughout
the day. I'm a novice at this server stuff if you could explain better.
Some consultant came in and set it all up so I'm not sure how it's
configured. Shouldn't SMB be enabled? Are you talking about this
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;555038 or something
else? It just says in there to enable SMB on the Win98 machines. I
couldn't find anything about setting the SMB on the server.
