I had to replace the hd in my Dell xpa/m140. I reinstalled Windows xp home
edition and installed sp3 update. Now I am getting an error box "Microsoft
Braodband Networking has known compatibility issue with this version of
Windows. For an update that is compatible with this version of Windows,
contact Microsoft Broadband Networking." Ok so now what? My wizard has
"found new hardware" but when I use the cd that came with my pc it can't find
the info it needs. I can't connect to the internet without it so I am using
my other computer. Where do I find the files I need?

I went to the support (kb814445) site I can't connect to the internet with
the problem laptop via wireless - of course - do I understand correctly that
it wants me to attach directly to the router? Is that what they call the
base station?
What equip info are you asking about? Router? pc hardware?

isn't there a label on the router?
you can log into it through a web browser with a wired computer

192.168.2.1

if you did not change the password (which you should have done), the
default password is

admin

wireless NIC = wireless network card. are you using a Microsoft
network card or the one that came with the computer.

You do NOT need the Microsoft software to manage either the router
or the card.

I have the MN-500 and have this same problem.
Can I download an update to the Network Utility somewhere?
My PC died and would like to use my laptop to manage the base station.
I have lost my password and need to reset the router.
Does it need to be connected directly to my computer to manage the device?

Thanks for the info.

you don't need the utility to manage it.
use a web browser and log into it
http://192.168.2.0 as I recall, and you should manage it over a
wired connection.

Hi Barb, I have the same message that Carol does, "Microsoft Broadband
Networking has a known compatibility issue with this version of Windows. For
an update that is compatible with this version of Windows, contact Microsoft
Broadband Networking." So I have tried to no avail, even talked to Chingboi
in the Phillipines!
My Microsoft MN510 is on a Compaq Presario 705US, USB. The base PC is a
DELL. The modem is a Seimens SpeedStream 4100, the router Seimens
SpeedStream 2624 Wireless DSL/Cable Router. Printer and DELL(XP
professional) work fine on router. The Compaq cable connection seems dead,
but the Network Connections shows the wireless network USB adapter okay.
Kind of hard to download anything to the Compaq if I could find it, "Not
connected"!
Can I download something (what?) to the DELL on a flash card to carry to
the Compaq? How do I direct the download destination?
Thanks for your interest so far. The closest I have come to someone
recognizing the problem.
Wesley

Your issue is different - there is a work around for the MN500 base
station but not for your issue.

The USB wireless MN510 adapter uses the PRISM chipset and those
folks are out of business. Driver development does not exist. You
need to replace the MN510. Besides there being no driver, it only
supported WEP which is not secure and dangerous to use.

As for the wired connection in the Presario, that is a different
issue. Unplug the USB NIC and reboot make sure the wired NIC is
enabled. If it was previously working, try a system restore. For
more help with the wired connection, try the
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing newsgroup or
Compaq support.
